Killer driver arrested: Malawi Police charge him for causing death of two people due to ‘reckless driving’

Malawi police at Kanengo Station  arrested a 39 year old driver for causing death by reckless driving at Choto trading centre on 10 September, 2017.

According to Kanengo Police Public Relations Officer, Salome Zgambo Chibwana, the man identified as Patrick Chadza of Kamphanje village, Traditional Authority Njolomole in Ntcheu, is being accused of causing death of two people in a road accident.

Zgambo further said during the incident the driver was driving a motor vehicle, Toyota Dyna, 3 tonner, registration number DA1015, from Chitukula village whilst heading towards Dzedza (Area 25).

“When he reached Choto Trading Centre, he drove to the extreme right side of the road where he hit a bicycle taxi operator who was carrying a passenger. The bicycle taxi operator identified as Khalidwe Mariko, aged 18 and the passenger identified as Rajab white aged 24, died on the spot,” said Zgambo.

“Following the incident, the driver escaped from the scene and surrendered himself to Kanengo police station,” added Zgambo.

Zgambo said the preliminary police investigations have established that the driver was over speeding.

Khalidwe Mariko hailed from Nkhandwe Village Traditional Authority Chitukula in Lilongwe while Rajab White came from Traditional Authority Maganga in Salima District.

The driver will appear before court soon to answer a charge of causing death by reckless driving under Section 126 Subsection 4 of the Road Traffic Act.
