Kumbu dumps Tay Grin, releases debut album

Over a year now, after signing a ‘lucrative’ recording deal with Black Rhyno Entertainment founded and headed by renowned rapper Tay Grin, R&B singer Kumbu, has parted ways with the label, Nyasa Times has leant.

According to sources, the 20-year-old Blantyre-based vocalist, real name Kumbukani Milundo quit the label three weeks ago.

Reports reaching Nyasa Times indicate that Kumbu and Black Rhyno Entertainment are however yet to officially divorce.

“It’s not official but Kumbu is no longer working with Black Rhyno,” disclosed the source close to both the artist and the record label.

Kumbu I want to make it on the local scene first

And in an interview, Kumbu who is expected to release his debut album titled ‘Ma Hagi’ soon, said “I haven’t signed off the contract [with Black Rhyno Entertainment] but the album which I will be releasing soon will not be [released] under Black Rhyno.”

Kumbu signed a two-album recording deal with Black Rhyno Entertainment in May 2010. The highly publicized deal came with pomp as the artist was promised recording, promotion and marketing of his music both locally and internationally with his videos hitting top music video channels such as MTV and Channel O.

However, 19 months down the line, the artist just released three singles namely ‘Shooting Star’ featuring Tay Grin, ‘Udzandimenyetsa Ndeu’ and ‘Wakwiya ndi Mfiti’ but without a music video not even on local television.

Kumbu told Nyasa Times: “The direction that he [Black Rhyno Entertainment’s CEO] wanted me to take was not the direction that I wanted. He wanted me to focus on going international when I wanted to stick to my roots and make it on the local scene first.”

He also disclosed he has renewed his relationship with the Dare Devils, who used to produce for him before joining Black Rhyno Entertainment.

“I have recorded most of the tracks on my forthcoming album with the Dare Devils. I’m back with them,” revealed Kumbu.

Some of his Soul/R&B songs on Kumbu’s soon-to-be-released album include ‘Misala’ featuring Marcus of Dare Devils, ‘Uzandimenyetsa Ndeu’, ‘Tseke Tseke’, ‘Tchekela Lebo’ ‘Mwetulira’ and ‘Ma Hagi’ featuring Nde’feyo Entertainment’s Piksy.
