Lands Minister Msukwa and Ashok arrested in corruption investigations

The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has arrested Minister of Lands & Urban Development, Kezzie Msukwa and Ashok Kumar Sreedharan aka Ashok Nair in relation to corruption and bribery investigation by the Bureau.

Msukwa- abused his power as Minister to engage in corruption

The warrant of arrest issued on Wednesday by the Chief Resident Magistrate says Msukwa “is reasonably suspected of having committed four counts of corrupt use of official powers contrary to section 25 (1) of the Corrupt Practices Act as read together with Section 34 of the Corrupt Practices Act”.

Particulars of the offense are that between July and August 2021, in Lilongwe, Msukwa facilitated the sale of a land under his jurisdiction as Minister of Lands & Urban Development in Area 46 plot number 46/2057 to Sattar.

It is alleged the Minister was bribed with K4 million and a Mercedes Benz C Class for the advantage of Msukwa’s associate Moses Kafunda.

Msukwa was also bribed K15 million by Ashok to buy land in Chipoka, Salima.

Ashok is also charged of facilitating a K4 million bribe to Msukwa to facilitate payment of duty at Malawi Revenue Authority for the Mercedes Benz C Class bought for the benefit of Moses Kafunda.

The ACB in collaboration with Britain’s National Crimes Agency — UK’s anti-corruption authorities — are investigating both Sattar and Ashok over allegations of corruption and bribery of “politically exposed” persons in the Mutharika and Tonse administrations.

These Indians are termites like Dr Hastings Banda use to say. They want easy money and call Etrugal actor from Turkey for wife’s birthday and present the wife with Brand new Bentley. They take advantage becsuse no one gets prosecuted in Malawi specially the Indians but if a local Malawian stole a petty thing he wiuld go straight to prison.

Who is ACB fooling? The mercedez benz belongs to Moses Kafunda. Why is ACB lying that it was corruptly given to Kezzie Msukwa?

A cabinet minister can in no way be a small fish. Let’s just hope this is going to come to a logical conclusion within reasonable time

If indeed they are also deep into corruption they should be arrested, no sacred cows.

Maybe it will be helpful if you provide information to ACB which can lead to the arrest of the so called “chejumo” otherwise such comments contribute almost nothing to reducing corruption and at the same time undermine what others are doing on this.

Because its a lucrative way to make large amounts of money, by just using one’s job title, ie ‘Minister’, bribery for land purchase is going to be hard to stop or eliminate altogether. But this is a job well done by the current administration of President Lazarus Chakwera. Well done, Sir!
