Ligoya still RBM Governor –President Banda
Malawi President Joyce Banda dispelled rumours that Reserve Bank of Malawi (RBM) Governor Dr Perks Ligoya has been sacked.
Reports indicated that Ligoya was given the boot and replaced with Mary Nkosi.
But the President said Ligoya remains in his position as central bank chief.
“I spoke to the governor last night; I don’t know where you’re getting these reports,” said President Banda.
She was responding to a journalist question at a news conference in Lilongwe on why Ligoya was sacked.
The President however confirmed the sacking of Secretary to the Treasury Joseph Mwanamveka.
He has been replaced by career bureaucrat Radson Mwadiwa, who also becomes chairman of the state-owned Malawi Savings Bank replacing Mwanamvekha.
The President said she would “move around” certain people in government.
“This is normal in government,” she said.
“I hope Malawians will allow me to appoint people to positions I see fit. After all, Malawians ask for merit.”
