MACRO replaces retrenched staff
Cash-strapped MACRO (Malawi Aids Counseling and Resource Organisation) has stirred a hornet’s nest. It has hired new staff to replace the crew it retrenched only three months ago.
Ironically, MACRO, is thus hiring amid revelations that it has an audit query of AIDS funds from the National Aids Commission totalling to K176 million between 2006 and 2007.
One of the redundant employee said he was living in destitution in Blantyre because Macro is not giving him his dues.
“There are many of us who were laid off three months ago. Management said the organization has money. We have not yet been paid. Surprisingly they are employing new people,” the fired employee said.
Those that were declared redundant are juniors and the organization has not fired two accountants, one in Blantyre and the other in Zomba, who forged cheques of up to K70,000 and K170,000.
“There is total abuse of resources. Contracts are being awarded dubiously and procurement is full of corruption,” a source said.
Other employees have spent over five months without pay.
Many employees said they are working on exit strategy because MACRO has become a sinking Titanic.
