Madam Chakwera calls for concerted efforts in ending child marriages
First Lady Madam Monica Chakwera has called for concerted effort and unity in ending child marriages which she says are ruining lives of girls in the country.
Madam Chakwera made the call on Tuesday at Chinkhoma Primary School ground in Kasungu where she presided over the launch of Ending Child Marriages Campaign, which is part of OXFAM’s End Violence against Women and Girls (EVAWG) campaign.
Madam Chakwera said all stakeholders should come together to make sure child marriages are eliminated in the country.
“Non-Governmental Organisations, parents, guardians, chiefs, faith leaders and all of us should join hands to successfully end child marriages and abuses faced by children that affect their academic performance and contributes to school dropout,” she said.
OXFAM Country Director, Lingalireni Mihowa said Covid-19 wreaked havoc, which resulted in most children getting married and there was need to do something about it.
Also gracing the occasion were Inspector General of Police, Merlyn Yolamu, Deputy Minister of Gender Agnes Nkusa Nkhoma, Deputy Minister of Agriculture Madalitso Wirima Kambauwa, Speaker of Parliament Catherine Gotani Hara and Deputy Speaker, Madalitso Kazombo as ‘he for she’ champion.
