Malawi climbs three places in Fifa ranking

Malawi national team aka the Flames might have lost 3-2 to Chad in the Africa Cup of Nations Qualifiers match in N’djamena last week but the team has moved three steps in the latest Fifa ranking for March released on Wednesday, March 7, 2012.

In the continent, the Flames are on 21st slot with Ivory Coast being the number one team despite being beaten by Zambia on the fourth place now.

In the Sadc region, the Flames are on third place behind Zambia and South Africa.

Flames: Up

Globally, the Flames moved from 98 to 96 with Spain remaining on top as the number one team followed by Holland which regains the second spot from Germany which falls to third.

Flames coach Kinnah Phiri was delighted with the Flames climb.

“It is encouraging that we are still in top 100 in the World. We will make sure that in our next games we do well so that in the next ranking we should be somewhere,” said Phiri.

The Flames next game will be in June against Nigeria in the World Cup qualifiers before taking on Chad in their second leg Africa Cup of Nations Qualifiers encounter in Blantyre.
