Malawi declares Friday Muslim Eid-el-Fitri festival holiday

Malawi Government has  declared Friday  9 August a public holiday to celebrate the 2013 Muslim Eid-el-Fitri festival.

The Eid-el-Fitri Festival is usually observed by Muslims all over the world to mark the end of the Holy month of Ramadan, which involved fasting.

The Eid celebrations begin depends on confirmed sighting of the new moon. This is likely to happen Wednesday meaning that the celebration start Thursday.

According to Sheikh Dinala Chabulika of Muslim Association of Malawi,  Eid prayers will be held Friday.

However, Malawi government said in consultations with the Muslims Association of Malawi have agreed the the public holiday should be on Friday.

“The Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development wishes to inform the general public that on advice from the Moslems Association of Malawi in conjunction with Majlis Ulama Council of Malawi and the Riyatul Hilal Committee, this year’s Eid ul Fipri public holiday will be observed on Friday August 9, 2013,” reads a statement issued by spokesman of Local Government Ministry, Maganizo Mazeze.

“Therefore, the Ministry wishes to request all those in authority to make necessary arrangements with their employees in respect of the public holiday.”
