Malawi First Lady blows taxpayers K30m on UK trip for son’s graduation

Barely a week after being in the news for her Beautify Malawi charity going into business, leasing out donated trucks to Blantyre City Council (BCC) in a deal that appears to have violated procurement rules, the First Lady Gertrude Mutharika, wife of President Peter Mutharika, is in the headlines again for blowing K30 million from public coffers to attend her son’s graduation in England.

The son, Tadikira Mafubza is on the other hand trending on social media for flaunting wealth with his friends who are members of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) youth committees called the ‘rich gang’ of DPP.

Pictures posted on social media shows Tadikira is living the high life while many in Malawi went hungry.

They boost of enjoying comfortable lifestyles including having all newly purchased new Range Rovers white in colour and dubbed the trip to England as Europe DPP victory celebration that will also take them to Italy.

They had been to South Africa recently, according to posts on social media, showing off expensive cars, noshes and fashion as the country battles a struggling economy.

Now the First Lady has taken seven State Residences officials, including security for a 10-day trip to England to attend son Tadikira’s graduation on Friday at the University of Greenwich with a master of science in civil engineering.

The trip will cost at least K30 million from the public coffers.
