Malawi gov’t cuts down funding to ministries, depts by 50%
Government has cut down by 50 per cent funding to ministries and departments a development that is expected to hamper proper delivery of a number of services and projects.
Nyasa Times has established that K400 million has been paid as membership fee for SADC while K1 billion of the diversified money has been directed towards next year’s elections.
Nations Msowoya, Ministry of Finance spokesperson, has confirmed the development.
He said government had no option but to relocate money meant for the ministries and government departments elsewhere.
“Government is working hard towards alleviating the problems that may arise as a result of the cut down,” said Msowoya.
He said that ministries and government departments have been advised to budget on the money that has been made available to them for the meantime – cash budget.
According to sources, the Department of Civil Aviation – responsible for airports in the country – has been given K2 million instead of K6 million for the month.
Malawi President Joyce Banda was appointed SADC chairperson during the just ended 33rd Heads of State and Government Summit held in Lilongwe.
