Malawi govt spends K7 bn on office rentals
Government says it will save up to K7 billion in office rental pay outs after construction of office buildings is completed at Capital Hill, the seat of government.
Finance ministry spokesperson Nations Msowoya said the government spends close to K500, 000 for each office space for some ministries at City Centre in Lilongwe alone.
Some of the ministries renting office space at City Centre include Lands, Trade and Information as well as some of President Peter Mutharika’s aides who are in Kang’ombe House.
Others are offices of Ombudsman.
Msowoya said the K6 billion office buildings will help the government cut rental budgets so the money could be diverted to social services.
There have been cases when the government has failed to pay rentals for some offices and land lords sealed off the offices.
Msowoya was upbeat some ministries will get into the new government offices before the end of the year.
