Malawi Govt to spend K74bn on relief food

Officials from the he Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA) say they are to spend K74 billion to buy relief food for 847,000 households during the lean season.
The response program, which started in November last year is targeting vulnerable and food insecure households across the country.
The government through different partners is distributing maize or K25,000 cash to ultra-poor households and hunger stricken families.
DODMA’s Director of Preparedness and Response Moses Chimphepo said the 847 000 households represent 3.8 million people.
Speaking in Balaka, Chimphepo appealed to various partners to provide support as the government released maize worth 27 billion kwacha and 7 billion kwacha cash.
He said that other partners are already supporting the initiative such as the World Food Programme-WFP.
