Malawi High Commissioner to UK receives London Freedom of the City
The Malawi High Commissioner to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland on Monday, 27th March, 2017 received the Freedom of the City of London, becoming an honorary citizen of the city.
The ceremony conferring High Commissioner Kenna Mphonda took place in London at the Guidhill court and was sworn in by the Remembrancer Paul Double.
High Commissioners and Ambassadors from Zambia, Gabon and Ivory Coast among others witnessed the ceremony.
Prominent Malawians including academician Dr. Mpalive Msiska and businessman Kirk Thakrar also were in attendance.
High Commissioner Mphonda is the first Malawian diplomat to receive the honour, whose past recipients include Malawi’s founding President Dr. Hastings Kamuzu Banda, South Africa’s anti-apartheid icons Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Late Princess Diana and Malawian based in London, Augustine Chipungu.
