Malawi, Kazakhstan establish ties as Chaponda eyes new trade markets

Malawi and Kazakhstan have formally established diplomatic relations, with the two countries also outlining early plans for trade covering wheat, tea, coffee and macadamia nuts.

The development was sealed on the sidelines of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly in New York, where Malawi’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, George Thapatula Chaponda, met his Kazakh counterpart, Mukhtar Tleuberdi.

The two ministers signed a Joint Communiqué on the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Republic of Malawi, formally placing ties between the two nations on an interstate footing.

Both sides agreed to strengthen political dialogue and expand practical cooperation, including direct contacts between their foreign ministries, companies and educational institutions.

Among the areas discussed, trade emerged as one of the most tangible.

According to Kazakhstan-based news outlet DKNews.kz, the two countries considered the possibility of Kazakhstan supplying wheat to Malawi, although no volumes, timelines, logistics routes or commercial terms have yet been finalised, meaning the discussions remain at an exploratory stage.

Malawi, on its part, expressed interest in pushing its own products onto the Kazakh market, particularly tea, coffee and macadamia nuts, giving the emerging relationship an immediate commercial dimension, Kazakh grain moving one way, Malawian agricultural exports moving the other.

Beyond agriculture, the two countries also identified mining, digitalisation and education as additional sectors where cooperation could grow.

No specific investment projects, participating companies or financing details have been announced at this stage, with officials describing the talks as having defined priority sectors rather than produced concrete deals.

Both governments said they intend to maintain regular dialogue going forward, with the next step being whether the political understanding translates into direct business negotiations between companies and institutions in both countries.
