Malawi Pres. Banda meets Emir of Kuwait
President Joyce Banda on Wednesday held bilateral discussions with His Highness Sheikh Sabah Al Jaber Al Ahmed Al Sabah, the Emir of the State of Kuwait on the side-lines of the Third Arab – African Summit in Kuwait.
State House Press Officer Tusekele Mwanyongo confirmed to Nyasa Times that President Banda was privileged to be the one of the two leaders who attended the summit who had been granted the audience with the Kuwait ruler.
According to Mwanyongo, President Banda expressed gratitude to His Highness the Amir of Kuwait for the US$1 billion that Kuwait announced on Tuesday for investment and infrastructure projects in Africa.
The Malawi President also thanked the Government of Kuwait for its continued support towards Malawi’s social and economic development.
While in Kuwait, President Banda witnessed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Direct Aid formerly the Africa Muslims Agency that will see a cross section of the society in the country benefit from the organization through the provision of various social amenities.
Banda said she was particularly happy with the organization’s pledge to construct a University in the country that will focus on provision of technical education.
President Banda further appealed to Direct Aid to help construct a grand Mosque in Mangochi, a request she said she had made to the organisation earlier on.
The Malawi leader had also earlier delivered a speech at the third Arab-Africa Summit = as the current Southern African Development Community (Sadc) Chairperson.
