Malawi woman drinks Kachasu to death: Hippo kills 12-year-old boy
A woman in Thyolo died on Wednesday after drinking Kachasu on an empty stomach.
Thyolo Police Public Relations Officer, Edith Likaka said the deceased, Mary Jonasi on Christmas day went on a drinking spree with her husband and they drunk through the night on an empty stomach.
“She died on Wednesday after she drunk a lot of Kachasu without eating any food. Post-mortem at Thyolo Hospital confirmed the same,” said Likaka.
The woman hailed from Changata Village, T.A. Changata in Thyolo.
Meanwhile, police are appealing to people to avoid drunkenness especially during the festive season where they may be tempted to take more.
Hippo death
Elsewhere, aA hippo killed a 12-year-old boy on Christmas Day at Chintheche in Nkhata Bay.
An eye witness, Alick Manda said Chelyton Banda and his colleague went fishing at a water reservoir in the area which is a habitat for hippopotamus and crocodiles.
“The boy and his friend were in one canoe. While fishing, a hippo hit the canoe and it capsized,” Manda said.
Nkhata Bay Police spokesperson Sergeant Martin Bwanali confirmed the incident on Thursday.
“The hippo caught the deceased and ran away into deep waters. The other boy managed to swim and escaped unhurt,” Bwanali said.
He added that fishermen who were at the scene failed to rescue the boy, but later managed to recover some body parts whose burial took place on Wednesday.
Sergeant Bwanali has since advised village heads, parents and guardians not to allow boys to fish on the water reservoir.
Banda hailed from Viwanga Village in Traditional Authority Fukamalaza in Nkhata Bay District.
