Police in Mzimba have arrested Chancy Mtambalika 36, from Mtambalika Moyo Village in the area of Traditional Authority M’mbelwa in the district after he was suspected of shooting to death a Zambian national and stealing his vehicle.
Mzimba Police Public Relations Officer, Sergeant Gift Nyirongo said Chancy Mtambalika and his accomplice Thomas Makina, on Friday December 14, 2012 while armed with a Riffle, went to Embangweni and whilst there, they saw a Malawian Ambulance going to Lundazi in Zambia and asked for a lift.
The PRO reported that the two suspects spent a night at Lundazi till Saturday morning when they spotted and hired a saloon car belonging to a Zambian Miderick Simasiku Ling’wangwa to escort them to Mzimba.
On the way near Mqocha in Mzimba, Mtambalika told the driver that he wanted to relieve himself at a nearby bush and when the driver pulled to a halt, he immediately shot the driver who died on the spot while the assistance to the driver managed to escape.
He said Mtambalika and his friend drove the vehicle and hid it at Kanjinga Rest House at Mzimba Boma without telling the owner of the premises.
According to Nyirongo, the assistant driver who managed to escape the shooting reported the matter to Zambia Police officers who linked up with Mzimba Police, leading to the recovery of the vehicle and arrest of the two suspects.
“We managed to arrest both suspects and recovered the riffle which was thrown in a pit latrine at Mtambalika’s house. The two suspects may be extradited to Zambia where their case will be heard,” said Nyirongo
