MBC, Judiciary sign MoU to provide information to the public on judicial issues

The country’s state broadcaster, Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) and Malawi Judiciary have entered into partnership which will give opportunity to MBC radio as well as Television to start airing judicial matters programmes by creating a platform where the public will be able to access information regarding on how the judiciary works through special 30 minutes episodes to be introduced soon called ‘Taking the Court to the People’.
According to the Director of Engineering at MBC, Aidan Gumeni, the first of its kind agreement which was signed on Monday at Supreme Court of Appeal in Blantyre, will play a big role in educating the masses through communication by taking all the processes that goes around and what happens behind the judicial processes.
“This is very important for Malawians and democracy because for along time the public has been following what the Executives and  Legislatures have been doing but there has been always alot of myths behind the High Court but through this partnership and Taking the Court to the People program,  Malawians will have an advantage to know what actually happens in the court which will also meet our mandate as MBC of Informing, Entertaining and Educating because out of the three arms of the government,  we have been doing well with the two except Judiciary, so through the communication strategy that the Malawi Judiciary were developing they have emphasized on the communication and considered us to be the partner as we are a trusted institution,” said Gumeni.
In his remarks, Chief Justice Rizine Robert Mzikamanda expressed delighted with the newly signed partnership saying the MoU sets them a journey to open up a judiciary to the public to make sure they’re able to communicate with the public by indicating to the masses what it is that they do, how they do it and how they can access codes.
“We do believe that this collaboration will surely transform the way we do business with the public in the judiciary. As a judiciary we are truly committed because we believe in open justice and this is a global thing and we want to go with global trend by having open justice for all because we don’t want to rally behind,” said Mzikamanda.
