Minister assures tight security in fertiliser subsidy programme
Malawi Government intends to tighten security for this year’s distribution of the subsidized fertilizer in order to prevent theft.
The Minister of Agriculture and Food Security Professor Peter Mwanza made the remarks in parliament on Thursday in response to a question from Member of Parliament for Phalombe south Daveson Nyadani who asked him to consider publishing a list of beneficiaries.
“I would like to agree with the observation by the honourable member, even during this year’s review and evaluation meeting; there were suggestions to consider publishing the names of the people who receive subsidized fertilizer.
“I ‘m pleased to tell the house that during this year’s exercise that will be done,” said Minister.
Mwanza said they will publish the list of the beneficiaries of this year’s planting season and ensure that the list is made available at every extension planning area (EPA) and for all Area Development committees (ADCs).
“The challenge we may face is the production of fake receipts which normally occur.
“We want to make sure only the right people benefit from the exercise. The finger prints will be collected in advance and they will be marched at the selling points.
“The initiative will be piloted in some selected districts this year,” said Mwanza.
During this year’s subsidy programme a total of 1.5 million Malawian farmers are expected to benefit from the programme, an improvement from last year’s number of 1.4 million.
