Misa-Malawi urges Mutharika to reverse MBC boss’s re-deployment
The Malawi chapter of the Media Institute for Southern Africa (MISA-Malawi) on Tuesday called on President Peter Mutharika to reverse his decision on the redeployment of Dr. Benson Tembo from Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) to the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA).

Tembo was a Director General at MBC and has since been redeployed to MACRA as an Advisor on Digital Migration.
MISA-Malawi Chairperson Thom Khanje said in the commercial city of Blantyre on Tuesday that his organization is disappointed with the decision and find the removal as retrogressive and a sign of continued political interference by the government in the operations of MBC.
“This is contrary to the promise by President in both his inaugural and first State of the Nation Address to Parliament in June and July 2014 that MBC will work independently,” he said.
He added that the President should always make sure that he lives by his words and desist from making decisions that are contrary to his promises.
“ Let the MBC board independently assess his performance for possible re-engagement when his contract expires in April this year,” he suggested.
MISA-Malawi re-affirms its standing position on the need for MBC to be freed from political interference by reviewing the Communications Act to turn the corporation into a public service broadcaster which serves the needs of all Malawians regardless of their political affiliation, he said.

Malawians lets learn to accept change. Benson Tembo has in fact overworked at MBC, as if there are no well trained Malawian who can take over from very old guys. It is high time that he should become an entreprenuer and employ other Malawians. What else does he need, he also went to the embassy for christ sake is that not enough. Malawians are beginning to suggest that a public official should hold the same position for life, which is very wrong. These of you who have never worked in government should be schooled that it is a norm, according… Read more »
Bwana Tembo, you have provided an esteemed service at MBC since 70s. No need to worry or regret. Just move on. Ntchito zabwino onse akudziwa. Sometimes things happen for a reason. serve the country in another capacity. There are many public servants who have experienced this. Ubwino wake mwachoka bwino. Enjoy your advisor retirement package. No issue here MISA, ena ayese nawo alephere awone. Big up big man.
H Kamdidi,
So it’s true DPP government wants Malopa back at MBC? That would be hell for Malawians.
Malopa has no manners, no dignity, full of deceit, selfish and childish. He contributed
to cheating late Bingu, and the president’s collapse. Not Malopa, please!!!
Today is HIM but tomorrow will be THEM ,you played your part during JBS 3yrs ruring not now .Working as a puppet under the armpits of HIMSELF .Let them watch MBC as a family TV for the broadcaster.
Dr. Tembo has over-lived his usefulness at MBC and there is need to inject new blood in the top echelon of this institution. However, it should not be Malopa again!!
Am greatly worried of when malawi leaders will ever leave independent organisations independent. Our leaders always look out for people based on their political affiliations to be leaders rather than well equiped persons.when will YOU “whom you call urselves leaders of this nation” ever stop coaxing.if you are given the jurisdiction to choose leaders, please consider those who lifted you up there. Let only the TRUTH prevail. Mind you, being a leader doesnt mandate you to violite our rights of having access to information that is real NOT YOUR LIES..
Tembo was handpicked so there is no problem removing him. He is also on a fixed term contract which means govt is at liberty not to renew his contract without explaining why. Dont accept free jobs pse compete.
Benson Tembo thought he was on top of things. He sided with DPP during election defrauding excercise now?????? Thats the Mutharika family mphwanga sayamika umfunse Bakili…..
its high time politicians should stop interfearing in mbc operations. Let the president walk with the talk.
MISA MALAWI learn to explain clearly why you feel this is retrogressive as a reader of this page I want elaboration before I can comment.
