Mob kills couple over witchcraft allegations
An irate mob in Ntchisi has killed an elderly couple on allegations that it was practicing witchcraft.
Police spokesperson in the district Richard Kaponda said the mob raided the house of the two in the morning of November 19 and killed them.
“The mob said the two were teaching their children witchcraft,” said Kaponda.
The two have been identified as Dickson Thomas, 78 from Njeza village and his wife Veronica Simeon, 69, from Mataya village both from chief Nthondo’s area in Ntchisi.
Kaponda said a child in the area alleged that the two had been teaching him witchcraft and their magical plane fell on their way from Mozambique.
He said this infuriated some villagers who decided to administer mob justice on the two.
Belief in witchcraft runs deep in this conservative nation, where curses and spells are blamed for everything from unexplained deaths to the spread of HIV/Aids to irregular rainfall.
