Mozambique soldiers harassing Malawi border residents, MP tells Parliament
Security officials from Mozambique are harassing Malawians living along Lukono border, the Parliament learnt on Tuesday from Mangochi North member of Parliament (MP) Benedicto Chambo (independent).
Chambo asked Minister of Home Affairs and Internal Security to deploy Malawi Police near Lukono border to protect local people.
He said Mozambique security officer on October 14 this year entered Malawi through the Lukono border and harassed local communities.
Chambo said Malawi Police presence would deter their Mozambique counterparts from harassing the local community near the border.
Minister of Home Affairs and Internal Security Cecilia Chazama said Malawi government is aware of the incidence of harassment and is engaging officials from Mozambique to discuss the matter.
Police have no mandate in providing security perpetrated by foreign armed people. It’s the job of the MDF. Interpreting international law is a problem with our ministers
