MP Vuwa-Kaunda unveils K5bn wishlist: stadium, new market, 30 police houses and bitumen roads promised for constituency

An MP has triumphantly hailed President Peter Mutharika’s first year in office as proof that election promises are finally being delivered, as he unveiled a sprawling K5 billion wishlist of new projects set to transform his constituency.

Vuwa Kaunda: Kaunda also outlined plans to rehabilitate streets inside Nkhata Bay District Hospital

Nkhata Bay Central MP Simon Vuwa Kaunda heaped praise on the administration, pointing to the rollout of free secondary education since January, improved food availability nationwide, and the eye-watering Constituency Development Fund increase from a modest K200 million to a staggering K5 billion per constituency as evidence the government means business.

Kaunda insisted residents in his own backyard were already reaping the rewards, with new roads under construction, clean water reaching communities for the first time, and medicines becoming increasingly available at local health facilities.

And according to the MP, this is just the beginning. He revealed the massive K5 billion windfall will finally unlock a raft of long-promised flagship projects, with implementation set to kick off on 1 April 2026.

Topping the ambitious list is the Chisu-Thoto Road, designed to connect isolated farming communities directly to vital markets, alongside a complete tarmacking and rehabilitation overhaul of every internal road inside Nkhata Bay Boma Town Centre.

In a move set to delight sports-mad locals, Kaunda also unveiled plans for a brand new modern stadium at Maganga Community Ground. The council has already splashed MK100 million in District Development Fund cash completing perimeter fencing, with a further K300 million now committed to push ahead with the main works.

The spending spree doesn’t stop there. Kaunda revealed plans for new school blocks, classrooms and teachers’ houses at Kapingama SRC School, alongside a major electrification drive bringing power to 20 previously underserved areas through the installation of 20 brand new ESCOM transformers.

Motorists haven’t been forgotten either, with the Nkhata Bay Town-Msumba-Kachenga-DPP Road earmarked for a full upgrade to bitumen standard.

On the health front, Kaunda pointed to the long-awaited completion of Thoto Clinic, including the previously non-operational Thoto Chisangawe Clinic, complete with new staff housing.

He also unveiled plans for a brand new Bwelero Clinic, designed to drastically cut walking distances for communities living under Senior Chief Mkumbira.

In a nod to traditional leadership, the ambitious plans also include a swanky new official residence for Senior Chief Mkumbira himself.

Keen to boost local revenue, Kaunda also revealed plans for a sparkling new market at Nkhata Bay Boma, forming part of a vast national K84 billion market programme backed by IFAD and the OPEC Fund.

Rounding off the dramatic unveiling, Kaunda confirmed plans for a brand new District Council office complex, designed to dramatically improve service delivery for residents visiting the Boma.

The sprawling wishlist doesn’t end there. Kaunda also outlined plans to rehabilitate streets inside Nkhata Bay District Hospital to ease ambulance access, alongside urgent repairs to the flood-damaged Nkhata Bay Port and Jetty, and the procurement of a brand new ambulance for the entire constituency.

In a further appeal to central government, Kaunda has demanded an increase in police housing from just 12 units to 30, alongside an expansion of his own bursary scheme, which currently channels 10 per cent of CDF funding directly to needy students.

“My constituency lies at the centre of tourism attraction. That is why we must urgently complete priority infrastructural works,” Kaunda declared passionately.

“Five billion kwacha is more than enough to construct the stadium, tarmac roads around Nkhata Bay Centre, and extend electricity to underserved areas,” he added confidently.

“This shows that commitments made during the campaign are being translated into action,” the MP insisted.

Kaunda closed by noting that stability in the prices of essential commodities could help ease the crushing cost-of-living pressure currently weighing heavily on struggling households across his constituency.
