Mungomo’s wife dies after cardiac arrest
Wife to press officer for late Malawi President Bingu wa Mutharika’s Albert Mungomo has died following a suspected fatal heart attack.
Mungomo’s wife, Elizabeth, died suddenly Friday morning after collapsing at the couple’s residence within the Mtunthama State Lodge compound in the city of Lilongwe.
A source within State House said Elizabeth was pronounced dead on arrival at a private clinic within the city.
“She just collapsed as she was entering her house. She had just come out of her car after dropping her kids at Bambino (a private school within the city) and neighbours rushed her to a nearby private clinic where she was pronounced dead,” said a source.
The death of Mrs Mungomo has come as a shock to the residents of the compound.
The sources said she died while her husband was in Blantyre attending the funeral of his boss, who died two weeks ago also of cardiac arrest.
One of the sources, however, confided in Nyasa Times that Elizabeth might have died of cardiac arrest following the ever ending differences within her marital home where she was subjected to abuse after her husband was also going out with another woman, his former workmate at state radio MBC Gloria Banda.
Mungomo and Banda were and are still in a steamy relationship that eventually led to the MBC radio presenter and producer getting a divorce from her husband in 2007.
“We suspect that she was facing a double shock both with what was happening in her home and also the sudden realisation that the family has to leave the opulence of State House following the death of Mutharika,” said the source who was closer to the wife.
Since President Joyce Banda took over office Mungomo has not been closer to the new president with one of Mrs Banda’s closest aides Ruth Govati immediately taking over as in-charge of press affairs for the presidency.
Mungomo was well known at State House for victimising most of his former workmates at MBC Radio, barring some of the upcoming and hard working reporters from covering Mutharika, both locally and international, on flimsy grounds.
Vigil for the deceased is taking place at their Mtunthama State Lodge.
