Mwanyembe re-elected as Karonga council chair
Councilor for Rukuru ward in Karonga Harry Mwanyembe has been re-elected as Karonga District Council (KDC) chair after going unopposed in the election on Monday.
On the other hand, councilor for Mlare ward Joyce Nyondo made history when she became the first female councilor to be elected as vice chair of the council after she defeated Patrick Chunda by 7 votes to 2.
Speaking in an interview following his re-election Mwanyembe said: “I’m greatful for being given another mandate. We have registered a lot of successes over the past year in a number of projects that we have implemented so my reelection is a testimony that we have done a good job.”
Mwanyembe therefore called upon councilors and the Secretariat to put their differences aside for the betterment of developing Karonga.
He said his first task will be to make sure that the K98 million which is idle at the council is put to good use and the K25 million for District Development Fund (DDF) is also utilized in various projects in the coming six months of his office.
Mwanyembe also asked the council secretariat to expedite the reopening of Kaporo health centre which the Medical Council of Malawi (MCM) closed down few weeks ago due to poor hygiene and sanitation at the health facility, adding the community around Kaporo is greatly affected by the closure.
In her acceptance speech newly elected vice chair council Joyce Nyondo, expressed her profound gratitude to the councilors for voting a woman into a leadership position.
“I’m really honoured to be given a such opportunity in a high office at the council level hence promise to work tirelessly to achieve our district’s developmental project in our sixth month tenure,” explained Nyondo.
Paramount Chief Kyungu while congratulating Mwanyembe and his vice asked councilors to forget about the election and concentrate on overcoming the challenges that are rocking the council.
No one is going to develop Karonga if you guys in Authority dont and it should be now or Never.
