NOCMA announces long term measures to avert fuel shortages

National Oil Company of Malawi (NOCMA) says they are exploring alternative long term measures which are aimed at ensuring sustainable flow of fuel in the country.

NOCMA Public Relations Officer, Raymond Likambale

Speaking in Beira during a media tour , NOCMA Public Relations Officer, Raymond Likambale said plans are at an advanced stage to implement the pipeline which will be called Tanzania-Zambia Mafuta Pipeline.

“NOCMA is exploring usage of an existing pipeline from Dar to Ndola (Passes through Mpika). The pipeline is commonly refered to as Tazama (Tanzania-Zambia Mafuta Pipeline). Note that the distance to Dar from Lilongwe is over 1.5 kilometers while Mpika is only 540km from Lilongwe-Beira to Feruka to Harare Pipeline,” he said.

He said trials already done and this has helped ease situation in Beira.

“We have been getting product at a place called Msasa. This has helped ease congestion challenges at Beira. Beira is usually congested due to low infrastructure development. The Bureaucracy especially customs, as highlighted by Depot Manager for Lake oil is another justification for usage of that pipeline,” he said.

He said the Nacala concept has already been submitted to Malawi Government .

“Nacala to Liwonde Pipeline, concept has already been submitted to Government for consideration. It would eliminate all bottlenecks affecting haulage of fuel,” he said.

According to Likambale, it would actually see infrastructure development in Liwonde as there would be need for Strategic Fuel Reserves, Roads and other supporting infrastructure to be put in place.
