North journalists celebrate Mothers’ Day with gifts and support

In a heartwarming gesture on Mother’s Day, journalists from the Nyika Media Club (NMC) visited the antenatal and postnatal wards at Mzuzu Health Centre to honor and support expectant and new mothers.

With sponsorship from Partners for the North, Nyika Properties Limited, and Awalanje Investment, Construction, and Civil Engineering Company, the journalists presented parcels containing essential items such as sugar, soya pieces, washing soap, and zitenje (wrappers) to nearly forty mothers.

NMC Chairperson Feston Malekezo emphasized the importance of honoring mothers, stating, “Every journalist is born from a mother. We felt that after writing stories about the challenges and achievements of mothers, we should also show our appreciation by supporting them directly.”

Masida Nyandeni Jere, Community Development Manager for Partners for the North, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the organization’s commitment to supporting local communities and women in particular. “We believe that development is driven by people and should benefit people,” he said.

The mothers expressed gratitude for the gifts, which will help alleviate some of the financial burdens they face during their hospital stay. Ivy Beza, an expectant mother from Mzimba District, said, “I never thought I would receive such a gift today. It’s necessary for people to support us during times like these.”

Ruth Longwe, a new mother, shared similar sentiments, noting that the gesture made her feel valued and appreciated.

Towera Kasanga Gondwe, Nursing Officer for the Labour Ward at Mzuzu Health Centre, praised the journalists for their kindness and generosity, emphasizing that the gifts would be of great benefit to the mothers, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds.

On Mother’s Day, eight babies were born at Mzuzu Health Centre, marking a joyous occasion for the mothers and their families. The journalists’ visit served as a reminder of the vital role mothers play in society and the importance of supporting them.
