Nurse arrested for stealing drugs in Karonga
Police in Malawi’s northern boarder District of Karonga have arrested a 23-year-old man for allegedly selling stolen drugs valued at bout K8,000 to Mbukwa clinic in the district.
Karonga police Officer-in-Charge Foster Mangani identified the suspect as Dyson Kanyimbo years old of Kapsongo village in the area of Traditional Authority Nthalire in Chitipa.
Mangani said the man works with Karonga District Hospital as a nurse and he was selling 12 bottles of Benzyl penicillin, seven bottles of penicillin and four small cartons of examination Gloves to a newly opened clinic in the district.
According to Mangani, the suspect admitted having stolen the medicine at the district hospital in maternity word when he was on duty on Tuesdayclaiming that he did that because he has stayed for three months without receiving his monthly salary.
Karonga District Hospital Officer Charles Sungani confirmed the matter saying the drugs are from their stores and that the man works with the hospital but as an intern claiming that he is a student of st Johns University and he is to graduate this weekend.
He further admitted that the suspect has not received his monthly income for about two months not three as he was claiming.
Meanwhile the District Commissioner Rosemary Moyo said the conduct by the suspected man is shameless as the district hospital has the history of shortage of drugs saying he deserve a sift punishment.
“I have come here at police to see for myself what this man has done because it’s a shock to us bearing in mind that the hospital has the history of shortage of medicine. To make matters worse the medicine are stolen in the maternity ward. Seriously this man deserves a stiff punishment so that others should learn a lesson,” she said.
According to Mangani the suspect will appear in court soon to answer charges of theft by public servant.
