Over 200 Malawians acquire duo citizenship status
Officials from Immigration and Citizenship Department say just over 200 Malawians have acquired dual citizenship status.
This follows a protracted process of issuance of dual citizenship following requests from Malawians in diaspora.
President Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera took up the issue as one of his campaign promises in the run up to the court sanctioned 2020 presidential election.
Wellington Chiponde, Public Relations Officer for Immigration and Citizenship department said the process is now progressing very well as the department enforced efforts to deal with the information gap that was firstly affecting the process of issuing out these dual citizenships.
The Malawi National Assembly passed the Malawi Citizenship Amendment Bill to amend the 1966 Citizenship Act, allowing persons of full age and capacity to hold citizenship of another country in addition to their Malawi citizenship.
The dual citizenship bill was assented into law in March 2019 and dual citizenship regulations were gazetted in November 2021.
