Pakistanis celebrate independence with cricket match at Mpingwe Sports Club
The Pakistan Welfare Association organised a highly charged cricket match at Mpingwe Sports Club in Blantyre on Sunday in celebration of their independence day which falls on August 14 every year.
The association decided to celebrate last Sunday, August 11, ahead of August 14.
A team of Pakistanis from Blantyre hosted another from Lilongwe and the Lilongwe Pakistan team beat that of Blantyre.
An official from Mpingwe Sports Club, Makbul Latif, said this is an annual event for Pakistanis when celebrating their independence.
“You are aware that Pakistan is famous for playing cricket and not football. So, every as they celebrate their independence they play cricket. Pakistan Lilongwe and Pakistan Blantyre. It’s a big event indeed,” explained Latif.
Dickson Matiya, a Malawian who plays in the Pakistan Blantyre team, said it was a wonderful event.
“We associate very well with our friends from Pakistan. Today they called for more Malawians to come and watch the game. As you can see, many Malawians especially the youth were here to watch the game and I hope they have learnt a thing or two about the game of cricket,” added Matiya.
