Patients starving at Mchinji hospital due to faulty pots

Patients are sleeping on empty stomachs at Mchinji District Hospital in Malawi’s central region due to damaged electric pots which the hospital management is failing to repair, Nyasa Times has established.

According to hospital member who spoke to  Nyasa Times, for some time now food provisions to patients have been a thorn-in-the-flesh because the hospital is also failing to buy firewood locally.

“The situation is bad and something must be done. Authorities are failing to make the issue public because they feel it might be interpreted politically,” said a source.

The source said that the hospital needs about K3.3 million to repair the pots.

The district health officer was not available for comment as he is reportedly out of the country. The hospital’s public relations officer a Mr. Semu could not be reached too when Nyasa Times tried to get comment as his phone couldn’t be reached.

On Wednesday Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH) also started experiencing a water problem which is making it impossible for medical personnel to attend to patients on hygienic grounds.
