Malawi Police at Kamuzu International Airport (KIA) have arrested a suspected illegal drug trafficker, just days after a court sentenced two of them to three years imprisonment with hard labour respectively.
KIA police spokesperson Saplain Chitondes aid the police arrested Agatha Sibongile Maseko who was allegedly found with 9.4kgs of an illicit drug called apomorphine.
Chitonde said Maseko allegedly wrapped the illegal drug in a way to beat the security system at the airport.
However, the airport x-ray machine detected the illicit drug as she was attempting to pass through it to board a Kenya Airways plane to Dehli, India.
“The Lilongwe-based cosmetics lady entered the departure lounge with her bags ready to pass through security checks, but then the X-ray machine exposed the drugs which were concealed in three specially-wrapped packets to beat the system,” said Chitonde.
He said Maseko was arrested as she attempted to escape the airport by jumping into a car that was dropping passengers, commanding the driver to speed away but he took time to do so as he was taken unawares.
Maseko, born on February 8, 1990, hails from Liphava village in chief Phambala’s area in Ntcheu.
