Police rescue elderly women from mob justice over witchcraft allegations

Malawi Police in Neno have rescued two elderly women from an angry mob which wanted to them on suspicion that they bewitched a man who was working in South Africa.

The women hail from Moffat village in chie Dambe’s area in the district.

Chief Dambe said the police came in time as the mob was about to lynch the women and are now in safe houses away from their homes.

“I urge people in my area to desist from making witchcraft allegations as it is impossible to prove that one has been bewitched,” he said.

The head of the Catholic Church Thomas Luke Msusa expressed worry over the growing incidents of witchcraft mob justice.

He asked the government and other rights groups to visit the area to sensitize people on human rights issues and witchcraft.

Two people were killed last week on allegations of witchcraft in the same area.
