Share World elects female chancellor Thedora Mapemba
Share World University on Saturday elected Thedora Mapemba as Acting Vice Chancellor, making her the first woman to ever head the institution and the second female university chancellor in the country.
The new Acting Vice Chancellor of Share World Open University Malawi (SOUMA) desribed the appointment as an honour saying she was ready to face the challenges ahead of her.
“Am going to detect myself as the leader of this great university to achieve our goal to be the very best institution in offering quality education in the country,” Mapemba said.
Mapemba pleaded for team work saying it was key to the development of the institution.
“I want to thank the council for their trust and honor they have in me. Working together can make us fulfil our goals of quality higher education in the country,” She said.
She further said that there are lot of opportunities at SOUMA and encouraged students and lectures to work hard as they face competition from other universities.
“We need to be working hard to produce good results for our students and institution as they are other universities competing with us,” Mapemba said.
In his remarks SOUMA Council Chairperson, Professor James Chipeta, said they want to continue doing well in offering tertiary education in the country.
“From day one, SOUMA has been a destination of choice for high achieving intellectually curious students who want to excel in their education and be productive to the nation,” Chipeta said.
He further asked the stakeholders and other well wishers to be patriotic to the institution in order for the university to achieve its mandate.
“Let us unite in developing our nation by working together as institutions. We need organizations out there to help us taking on board our students after they have graduated,” Chipeta said.
In his statement, Hope Mzumala, one of the institution’s alumni, said he was happy to part of the students who had passed through the corridors of SOUMA and hoped that with the appointment of the chancellor the institution would going achieve alot.
“Am happy for her that she has been appointed as acting Vice Chancellor. This institution needs people like her to achieve its goals, she was once my lecturer and with the experience she has, alot of students will benefit from her,” he explained.
