Speaker announces DPP loses seat in Lilongwe City South East
The National Assembly Speaker, Richard Msowoya, on Monday announced that ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has lost one seat in the House, Lilongwe City South East Constituency pending fresh elections.
The seat wes being held by DPP’s Bently Namasasu but lost it after the Supreme Court on March 6 ordered Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) to conduct a re-run of the disputed parliamentary election after the electoral body’s decision to declare (Namasasu winner of the May 20 2014 contest with 10 956 votes was challenged by MCP candidate Ulemu Msungama who got 10 854.
In his communication to the House, Msowoya announced the vacancy for the Lilongwe City South East Constituency following the Supreme Court of Appeal ruling that a rerun be held.
Parliament is set to provide funding in the national budget to carter for the fresh elections.
