Speaker bemoans indiscipline in Malawi Parliament
Speaker of the National Assembly Henry Chimunthu Banda has bemoaned the behaviour of some legislators in the august House, which he said does not bring dignity.
Speaking during the debate on the State of-the-Nation Address delivered to the House by Malawi President Joyce Banda on Friday last week, Banda said the conduct shown by some law makers was uncalled for.
“Everyone here is given an opportunity to speak, but if one has a contrary opinion to the one holding the floor, they should raise a hand and I will recognise them to make their concerns known,” he said.
He assured the House that he will ensure that discipline in Parliament is adhered to.
“Some of the comments are inappropriate. Our deliberations are aired live on radios and masses would not welcome inappropriate comments,” Banda said.
The speaker’s warning comes after he identified without naming them, six parliamentarians, who continuously booed as Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Leader in the House George Chaponda was making the party’s 30 minute long responses’ to the president’s address.
