State rights body visits MEC commissioner’s house ransacked during demo
A team of state rights body, the Malawi Human Rights Commission (MHRC) on Saturday visited one of Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) commissioners Reverend Kilion Mgawi house which was ransacked and vandalised at Nkhoma Trading Centre.
MHRC officials said they visited the residence as part of the program to record post-election violence.
Mgawi, a retired religious cleric for Nkhoma synod had his house vandalized and some property looted by unknown mob connected to the political violence which has erupted in some parts of the country following the messy May 21 presidential election results.
The crowd chanted Mgawi achoke! achoke! (Mgawi must go!), before storming the house, which was being guarded by police.
Mgawi was not at the residence which is situated within the Nkhoma synod headquarters in Lilongwe but his houseboy said the mob looted 25 bags of maize, television sets, three laptops, a power genset, among others.
Secretary general of Nkhoma synod Vasco Kachipapa condemned the attack on the residence of the retired cleric.
He said the mob came chanting anti-Nkhoma synod songs, urging the church to expel Mgawi from the campus.
Lilongwe police spokesperson Kingsley Dandaula said the police are yet to arrest the suspects.
MEC declared Peter Mutharika of Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) winner of the presidential race in the May 21 Tripartite Elections, with 1 940 709 votes. He was trailed by Chakwera with 1 781 740 votes.
UTM party leader Saulos Chilima and Malawi Congress Party (MCP) Lazarus Chakwera have since filed a petition in court, seeking nullification of the results over alleged irregularities.
inu. Did you visit Manesi Nyirongo in chitawira after being beaten by cadets? What about the woman undressed by cadets in mangochi?
Surprisingly Rev. Mgawi was seconded to MEC by MCP to represent and be the eye for the same party that is attacking him. Is there any sanity in all that? Unfortunately, the party leadership remains incognito and refuses to condemn such archaic practices. Is the aim just to destabilize the country and let APM fail to continue delivering his developmental projects, which is a smack in Chakwera/Chilima’s faces coz they are failing to understand APM’s wisdom? All APM is doing is designed by God the Almighty and you can’t alter that status quo. Rev. Mgawi is an upright man of… Read more »
Mgawi was not chosen by MCP. It was through Address Malata, the Vice Chancellor of MUST who is a wife of a Lhomwe Aggrey Malata. Mgawi is a father to Address and is now connected to DPP. Alfandika told the commissioners not to poison the finger that feeds them (not to work against DPP).
Am sure Lazarus is loving this while he is busy fasting
Nanunso a MCP munyanya kupepela, how can you appoint a 90 year old as your commissioner?
Bungwe lopusa kwambiri.Osathandiza kubweretsa Bata mudziko muno ndiye muzikachedwa ndikumuyendela munthu m’modzi, mwasowa zochita???.Ntchito yanu ndi chiyani mudziko muno agalu inu?????…
Why is it difficult for our Leaders to resolve the situation in a mature way ?? Do we have God fearing negotiators in this country ?? Why are they quiet ?where are they now than later ?where is catholic justice and peace commission? Where is Muslim justice and peace commission ? Where is our public affairs committee doing ??just watching ?? Why ?
Collateral damage. Never praise tippex. Never.
Maybe when your property or one of your loved ones is injured or killed by these so called protesters we will see if you can make such a statement. Going around destroying peoples residences and stealing is not protesting its called theft !!!!!
Or may be when your child dies in your hands after being on a hospital line for 5 hours only to be told that there is no mankhwala kaguleni. Meanwhile the closest pharmacy is 50 km away and it is already 5 pm then you will know how foolish people like Mgawi are for allowing cheats to prevail without standing up for truth.
