Tanzania cautious on Mary Waya’s Malawi netball role
Netball Association of Malawi’s move to appoint Tanzania national team expatriate head coach Mary Waya has made it to be cautious on her role for Malawi Queens for Africa Netball Championship scheduled for June 24-29.
Waya is on a two-month vacation and was included in the Malawi Queens coaching panel alongside Peace Chawinga Kalua, Collins Mhone, Sam Kanyenda while the former head coach Griffin Saenda is the technical director of the team.
Tanzania daily, Guardian newspaper reported on Thursday that the role in her native country has raised questions of her future.
“What we know is that Waya is still our coach and we expect her to start her duties once her holiday is over, we cannot block her from doing other things during her free time, if there is anything she will communicate to us,” a netball official in Tanzania, told the paper.
However, the Malawi netball legend has taken the move as the change of administration in Tanzania, might affect her contract.
It is not clear whether the newly Tanzania Netball Association would renew her contract after its expiry early this year.
“The previous Chaneta leadership hired Waya as the head coach of the team for one year period and last year, she led the team to win its first championship in Singapore,” states the paper.
“Her contract with Chaneta ended early this year and the current leadership says have not yet decided weather to renew her contact or not.”
Waya has been contracted by Filbert Bayi School to improve the team but she was also frequently assigned to assist the Tanzania national netball team when Anna Bayi was in power as Chaneta chairperson.
She was eventually roped in a head coach.
Meanwhile, Malawi will have two teams at the championship with the senior team and developmental side taking advantage of their privilege as hosts.
They started camping on Wednesday although a full squad will join the rest of the players after the K12 million GOtv Netball Championship in Lilongwe involving the country’s top teams, Bingu Tigresses, Blue Eagles, Civo nets, Escom Sisters and MTL Queens.
