Two arrested over medicine theft in public hospital
Police in Nkhotakota have arrested two health officials and a businessman in connection with the looting of government drugs from Nkhotakota District Health Office.
Nkhotakota Police Spokes Person Kaitano Lubrino said the suspect were arrested following tip off the police received from the public.
“The Police receives a tip that a businessman who owns a pharmacy in Salima is travelling from Nkhotakota while possessing government drugs illegally. We arranged for operation with Salima police which led to the arrest of the suspect and consfiscating the drugs,” he said.
Kaitano futher said that the arrest of the businessman implicated two health officials from Nkhotakota District Hospital who were also found with assorted government drugs in their houses including ARVs.
According to the DHO for Nkhotakota district hospital Dr. Wanangwa Chisenga have identified the drugs to have been stolen from the hospital’s bulk store Pharmacy after matching the Batch Numbers of the confiscated drugs and that on stock.
He said it was clear that some staff were selling off department stock to private practitioners or their own relatives.
Meanwhile, the two officials Smith Mwabungu (32) of Malaza village T/A Malanda in Nkhatabay who works as a Radiographer Technician and Komani Chirwa (28) of Tambala village T/A Kafuzira in Nkhotakota who also works as a Hospital Attendant are jointly answering a case of theft by public servant while the businessman Mathews Mabuka,25, from Dambanjoka village,T/A Mfukambiri in Nhotakota is answering of theft.
