UN applauds Chakwera

The United Nations (UN) has lauded Malawi President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera for his concerted efforts in ensuring that the young people’s future is secure and safe through his government’s deliberate policies aimed at empowering the youth in the country.

UN) Resident Coordinator in Malawi, Ms. Rebecca Adda-Dontoh has commended the Malawi leader for creating a conducive environment for a brighter future for the youthful population in the country who are dubbed as the future leaders.

Speaking during the launch of the revised National Youth Policy (2023-2028) at Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC) in Lilongwe, Adda-Dontoh said the UN family is pleased to note that the current administration has put in place sustainable measures aimed at creating a “vibrancy of young people” in Malawi.
President Chakwera is presided over the event Tuesday, October 31st, 2023.
Said Adda-Dontoh: “Malawi has all it takes now to achieve the Malawi 2063 and sustainable development goals. Malawi must celebrate the composition of youth population.”
According to Adda-Dontoh, going forward, it is imperative for the country to harness the contents of the new youth policy in order to create a “moment of optimism and action to achieve SDGs, as well as creating productive jobs for women, young people and the disabled.”
Speaking earlier, Chairperson for the National Youth Network of Malawi, Yamikani Chiphazi appealed to President Chakwera to ensure continued inclusion of youth in cabinet and also in senior positions among parastatals and other public entities.
Chiphazi thus implored government to ensure active youth participation in agriculture commercialisation, access to land and also farm inputs.
He also pushed for increased annual budget allocations towards their parent Ministry of Youth and Sports and also the National Youth Council (NYC).
The revised policy defines a youth as someone within the age bracket of 10 to 35 years.
The policy has identified 10 priority areas which include: Youth employment enterprise and skills development, transformative leadership and youth inclusion, education and social skills development, science, technology and innovation, health and nutrition, as well as youth and social wellbeing.
