Vendors offer 100K to nab people claiming Malawi Pres. Banda resignation
Union of vendors in former capital Zomba have joined President Joyce Banda in offering money to anyone who will give information to help arrest unknown person or people who authored a letter claiming that the Malawi leader had resigned due ill health.
The vendors pledged to add K100 000 (about $277) to President Banda’s K2 million (about $5 555) reward that will help to identify author of a ‘treasonous’ letter.
“As concerned citizens of this country, we have come together as chairpersons of all the vendors in Zomba City to contribute to the cause. Our State president has offered K2 million and we are just adding on that,” said Chairperson for the main market, Ayatu Chidothi.
The letter, dismissed as fake, has been circulating on social media. It was addressed to Speaker of Parliament Henry Chimunthu-Banda, asking him to manage the transition accordingly.
On arrival from Equatorial Guinea on Saturday, Banda offered K2 million to help identify those responsible for the letter.
Meanwhile, police say they’re probing the issue.
