Woman arrested for attempting to sell own son

Police at Jenda in Mzimba have arrested 27-year-old Brenda Jere for allegedly offering her 11-year-old biological son for sale at K2 million at Khosolo.

The woman was first apprehended by members of community policing on September 21, 2024 after getting a report from a business person who pretended to be the buyer. Members of community policing later handed her over to police at Luwerezi.

Reports show that Brenda Jere allegedly received K150, 000.00 through her Airtel money account on September 12, 2024. The money alert on her phone included a message that it was miracle money and she was being invited to join a certain church.

The woman withdrew the money and paid K100, 000.00 for her loan at Cadecom and K30, 000.00 for a village bank loan.

Public Relations Officer for Jenda Police Station, Sub Inspector Macfarlen Mseteka, says the woman started feeling unwell after failing to join the church.

“It has been established that since she got the money, she hasn’t been feeling well as she didn’t join the church and the owner needed the money back. In order to pay back the money, she offered her son for sale to a business person at Khosolo at a price of K2 million which came down to K1.5 million after negotiations.

“The buyer advised her to bring the son at his shop around 9:00 am on September 21 but he had already informed members of community policing on the impending illegal activity. Upon bringing the son into the shop, she was apprehended by community policing members who later informed police at Luwerezi,” explained Sub Inspector Mseteka.

Brenda Jere has been charged with selling a child contrary to Section 82 of Child Care, Protection and Justice Act.

She hails from Satiele Jere Village, Traditional Authority Khosolo in Mzimba District and will soon appear before court to answer her charges.
