YONECO calls for media, CSOs participation in Green and Inclusive Energy agenda agenda

Youth Net and Counseling (YONECO) has  urged media practitioners and Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) to sensitize communities on the importance of participating in Green and Inclusive Energy agenda.

Executive Director (ED) for YONECO, Macbain Mkandawire made the call in Machinga on Wednesday during a one day advocacy meeting for media practitioners and CSOs on a project called ‘Go Green’ which seeks to stimulate citizen and public engagement in green and inclusive energy (GIE) for sustainable development’.

“We want the media to provide adequate coverage and put GIE on the limelight. But for them to do so, we realized the need to build their capacity and support a media competition on GIE,” he said.

On this note, he said the project would engage policy makers to come up with relevant energy policies in conformity with GIE.

To ensure maximum coverage, the ED said the project would promote GIE activities through social media such as face book in order to reach out to many young people in the communities.

“Whilst we are all the beneficiaries of GIE agenda, youths are likely to benefit more because they would form the next generation hence the idea to use the social media platform as well.

“We hope through the sensitization campaigns, citizens and policy makers would be well versed with GIE issues and take appropriate action in the process,” he added.

GIE is one of the strategies that are being used by organizations to achieve both the United Nations Sustainable Energy for All (SE4AII) and Sustainable Development Goal no 7 which advocates for access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all.

The project’s overall goal is to increase the capacity of SCOs and media to support the GIE agenda through active citizenship on energy provision, finance, accountability and gender.
